Why I always book with a refund option

I’ve traveled way too much and have had plans change more time than I can count, that I know better than to book without a refund option.

Booking hotels and Airbnb accommodations with a refund option has become increasingly important in recent times. With the pandemic still affecting travel plans and uncertainty around when it will end, having the ability to cancel and get your money back has become a crucial factor in making travel plans.

Below I will explore why it is a good idea to book hotels, flights, and Airbnb with a refund option. Of course, there is some leeway to this rule. For example, if you know for sure your plans will not change, it’s a couple days away and you are definitely going, then that’s one thing. But for overall travel, and especially international travel, I highly suggest paying the extra $20 to $50 for peace of mind and flexibility.

Flexibility

One of the biggest advantages of booking accommodations with a refund option is the flexibility it provides. With uncertain times, plans can change at a moment's notice. Having a refund option ensures that you are not tied down to your original travel plans if something comes up. Whether it is an unexpected emergency, a change in the pandemic situation, or any other unforeseen circumstances, having the flexibility to change your plans without any financial penalty can save you a lot of stress and money.

Peace of Mind

Booking accommodations with a refund option can provide peace of mind to travelers. With the uncertainty surrounding travel plans, it can be stressful to plan and book accommodations without any safety net. Having the option to cancel and get your money back can relieve some of the stress and provide peace of mind. It allows you to make plans without the fear of losing your money if something unexpected happens.

Protection

Another reason why it is a good idea to book accommodations with a refund option is the protection it provides. In the event of a cancellation, having a refund option ensures that you are not left without any financial recourse. It protects you from losing your money if something unexpected happens, such as a travel ban or a change in the pandemic situation.

Value for Money

Booking accommodations with a refund option can provide value for money. While the upfront cost may be slightly higher than non-refundable bookings, the flexibility and protection it provides can make it worth the extra cost. In the long run, having the option to cancel and get your money back can save you a lot of money in case of unexpected circumstances.

These days I will pretty much never book international travel without a refund option. Of course, there are exceptions, but of of the time I stick by my rule and it has helped me out more than once. Booking with a refund options provides flexibility, peace of mind, protection, and value for money. While it may cost a bit more upfront, the benefits it provides can save you a lot of stress and money in the long run. So, next time you plan a trip, make sure to get that refund option!
